Water Hutch

Date

2013

Location

Des Moines, Iowa

Reminiscent of the many waterways that meander through the open flat of north-eastern Iowa, the constituent forms are constructed of built up dimensional lumber (white cedar). Each work occupies an area that is approximately 20 by 30 feet. Cloaked in an array of end grain, surface grain, the set of parts serve as an ambiguous measure by which people may situate themselves. Each component part is 11 feet long and 7.5 inches thick.

Conceived as a stand-alone sculpture or as part of a community of similar components arranged in series that make up a larger installation, the work can be placed in various contexts. However, it is thought that each installation be developed with a narrative specific to the host space. The work has been exhibited in multiple regional contemporary art institutions. The initial work was procured in 2013 by Faegre Baker Daniels law firm in Des Moines, Iowa. In addition, the law firm commissioned a second installation of similar work. The Faegre Bakers Daniel law firm offices were designed by Substance Architecture. The Water Hutch series was configured within this office space in collaboration with Substance Architecture.
