Iowa Ford Tractor Building
Project type
Rehabilitation
Date
June 2021
Location
Des Moines
The property is a one-story with full, raised basement, brick-faced, poured concrete and steel structure building with a flat roof. The building was constructed in 1949 to function as a tractor repair and warehouse building, and its visual character reflects both the original function and the Modern design aesthetic of its mid-20th century construction date. The property was historically rehabilitated for use as an undetermined, commercial tenant space on the first floor and vehicular parking in the basement. Alterations of the historic building included replacement of the roof, upgrading the mechanicals system, rehabilitation of the historic windows, upgrade of the interior staircase at the NE corner, re-opening the blocked historic openings on the north elevation, reconfiguration of the pedestrian entrance on the west façade and glazing of the two dock doors (historic doors retained in an open position).
